The II Marcha Ciclista del Primer Vino organised by Bodegas Tarón was a complete success, bringing together 150 enthusiasts, with a full house and surpassing the figure of 5,000 euros raised for this year’s charity project: research into childhood cancer. The sporting event, which took place this Saturday, was attended by big names in Spanish cycling, such as Marino Lejarreta, Joane Somarriba, Ramontxu González, Juanjo Cobo, Igor Astarloa and David López, as well as the Riojan cyclist Sheyla Gutiérrez, who is still active.
After the minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the DANA, the cycling peloton started a 56-kilometre route in a non-competitive ride that took them through the towns of Sajazarra, Cellorigo Villaseca, Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, Ochánduri, Herramelluri, Villalobar, Castañares, Casalarreina and Tirgo, finishing at Bodegas Tarón.
As was done last year, during the march, different stops were made to pay tribute to five veteran winegrowers of this cooperative. Five people chosen for their lifelong dedication to vine cultivation, demonstrating their love for the land, for their people and for responsible vine cultivation. With this, the honorees received a very special bottle containing the first wine of the 2024 vintage.
In short, a fun event where the most important thing was to share moments, enjoy the scenery and pay tribute to those who, for many years, have made our harvests possible.
After the route, the party continued at Bodegas Tarón, where cycling enthusiasts and professionals shared a small lunch with friends and family who wanted to visit the winery.
For research into childhood cancer
It is worth remembering that the registration fee and the coupons for the gastronomic tastings raised €5,420, which will go to the Fundación El Sueño de Vicky, whose aim is to finance projects for research into childhood cancer.
The cheque will be handed over on Tuesday 19 November at the Foundation’s headquarters in Madrid.
