09/05/2025Pantocrátor 2015 is a limited edition aged wine that is only produced in excellent vintages.
‘The legendary ageing capacity of the great wines of Rioja Alta elevated to its maximum expression’. This is how Pantocrátor 2015 is defined, the most exceptional wine of Bodegas Tarón, which is already on the market with a view to once again becoming one of the most spectacular wines of Rioja. A limited edition wine that is only produced in excellent vintages, such as 2015.

Its name evokes one of the emblematic figures of Romanesque art, so present in the area where it is made. Its etymology is a declaration of intentions, as its meaning in Greek is ‘he who can do all things’. It is a wine with its own identity that reflects the work and essence of the Tarón Territory, made up of four villages: Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, Sajazarra, Villaseca and Tirgo.
As the winery’s oenologist, Laura Manzanos, explains: Pantocrator 2015 is a single varietal Tempranillo made from grapes selected from the best vineyards owned by the winery, with an average age of 50 years old and located in the shelter of the Obarenes Mountains. With vines planted in goblet-trained vines in clay-limestone soils, the fruit is harvested by hand, practising viticulture that respects the environment in favour of quality wines.
The winemaking process is slow and unhurried, following traditional methods. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks with a total of two to three weeks of maceration and frequent punch-downs to extract the maximum character from the wine. Subsequently, the wine rests for a full year in tank before being placed for the first time in new American oak barrels, where it remains for 24 months. After this time, it is returned to the steel vat to be refined and ready for bottling. Before being marketed, the wine rests for at least 6 years, reaching an impeccable harmony.
A very deep cherry red colour with a very high robe. A marked glyceric density with a soft fall along the walls of the glass, anticipating its fullness in the mouth. On the nose, powerful and deep aromas, where ripe fruit merges with subtle notes of roasted coffee and spices from the oak, providing complexity and finesse. On the palate, hints of eucalyptus, ripe fruit, red fruit compote, along with flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and tobacco leaf, which enrich its character. The final mineral touch adds distinction, while the texture on the palate is ample and velvety, with refined, structured and silky tannins. The combination of fruity and spicy notes leaves a long and pleasant persistence, with an aftertaste that invites prolonged enjoyment.
Despite its years of ageing between barrel and bottle, it is a well-balanced wine with extraordinary acidity and great liveliness. In its short trajectory, this wine has already been awarded 92 points in the ‘Special Rioja Report 2025’ by the famous critic Tim Atkin.
Tarón Winery
Four villages in Rioja Alta with a long tradition in grape growing and united in winemaking make up Bodegas Tarón, the most northerly winery in the DOCa Rioja (at the foot of the Obarenes Mountains). With almost 700 hectares of vines with an average age of over 30 years, they produce a range of consistent, high quality wines. Wines that are a reflection of a region full of historical heritage with a landscape outlined by Romanesque churches and medieval castles.
