Bodegas Tarón’s track record continues to grow. A few weeks ago, we went to the capital to collect the Gran Oro medal won by Pantocrátor 2011 at the fourth edition of the Real Casino de Madrid Wine Competition. This recognition corresponds to the highest category in the contest and is awarded to the best wines presented; among them, the “Todopoderoso” from Bodegas Tarón. The award winners were chosen by a professional jury, made up of fifty experts in sensory analysis, by means of a blind tasting.
During the ceremony, the winners received the Gran Oro awards, consisting of a diploma and a solid bronze medal 16 centimetres in diameter. The presentation of these awards took place during a gala dinner held at the Real Casino de Madrid, a fabulous building located in Madrid’s Calle Alcalá and declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Here, we were able to share space and conversation with the great professionals and winemakers of the Spanish wine sector.
The event was also attended by the organisers of the competition, including its director, Francisco Jiménez; its organising director, Eliseo González; and its technical director, María Isabel Mijares. Rafael Ansón, president of the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy, also took part in the event, as did Alfredo Alvar, president of the Real Casino de Madrid, who showed his support for all activities related to the world of wine.
Pantocrátor 2011
Pantocrátor 2011 is a single varietal Tempranillo with selected grapes from the best vineyards owned by the winery, with an average age of 50 years old and located in the shelter of the Obarenes Mountains. With vines planted in bush vines in clay-limestone soils, its fruit is harvested by hand practicing an environmentally friendly viticulture for quality wines.
Its production process is slow and unhurried, following traditional methods. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks with a total of 18 days of maceration and daily punch-downs. It spends a full year in tank before being put into new American oak barrels for the first time, where it remains for 24 months. After that time, it rests in a steel tank to finish refining and be ready for bottling. Before being marketed, the wine rests for at least 6 years rounding off in the bottle.
Despite its 11 years of ageing between barrel and bottle, it is a balanced wine with an extraordinary acidity and great liveliness.
Pantocrátor 2011 is available in the Bodegas Tarón online shop at the price of €30,60.
